When to Ski Winter 21/22
Ski Resort Openings & Key Dates – Winter 21/22
With international travel off the cards until mid-May 2021 at the earliest, it is time to say goodbye to the Winter 20/21 Ski Season and look ahead with the promise of Skiing next Winter.
With the vaccine rollout and a planned easing of lockdown, confidence has returned to travel and we are already experiencing pent-up demand for next Season. Travel and Ski will bounce back.
Here we take a look at the key dates next Winter. If you would like any advice or quotes for travel next Winter, please do get in touch.
When does the Ski Season start?
For most resorts, this will be around the first week of December so the weekend of 4/5th December 2021 or the following weekend 11/12th December. This does of course depend to a certain extent upon snow cover however, by mid-November, most resorts have had their first significant snowfall and all resorts have extensive snow-making that make up for any of nature’s shortfall. As a minimum, you can expect excellent piste conditions this side of Christmas and the quiet slopes, cheaper prices and cosy mountain huts are a real treat.
If you are keen to ski before December then take a look at one of the Glacier Ski Areas in Austria: Stubai, Kaprun and Hintertux all open from mid-October.
When does the Ski Season end?
Easter Sunday falls on 17th April 2022 (a late Easter) and by this time lower resorts will have stopped operating (early April). Schools break up from Friday 1st April and higher resorts will be open until late April with Glacier resorts open well in to May.
It is worth noting that, statistically, upper slope snow depths peak around the third week of March so you can expect excellent snow cover in late March and April. Spring weather can vary from further snowfall to long, warm sunny days and some lower, south-facing slopes can become soft in the afternoon (still very ski-able or just take a late and long lunch!).
What are the key Holiday dates this Winter?
Christmas & New Year
Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Saturday so expect Sunday-Sunday or Monday – Monday changeovers with a shorter stay in the first week of January. There will flexibility for shorter stays up to 26th December (the weekend of 18/19 December will be a popular short stay weekend) however,
short stay availability over the New Year is very limited with minimum 7 night stays. Keep an eye out for great value shorter stays Sunday/Monday (2nd/3rd January to Saturday 8th January).
The perfect time for a short break in our opinion: The New Year crowds have departed (most depart 2nd or 8thJanuary 2022), snow depths are well-established and prices are lower than February with more flexible availability. The Hahnenkamm Downhill race in Kitzbuhel takes place on 22nd January 2022 and this impacts availability in the Kitzbuheler Alps region.
Half Term 2022
The half term 2022 is split over the weeks 12-19th February or 19-26th February depending on where you live in the country. The late Easter means the popular Karnival / Fasching week is 26th February to 5th March 2022 so you can expect high season prices and increased demand together with less flexibility at this time. Book early if you are restricted to mid-February dates.
March 2022 – A great time for a short ski break!
The high season crowds have gone home, the snow is still excellent with more to come (upper slope snow depths peaking mid to late March), prices are dropping and there is more flexibility. Spring is in the air and there is plenty of flexibility from 5th March 2022 through to the end of season in April.
White Pearl Mountain Days (www.wpmdays.at) is a two week event from 18.3.22 - 3.4.22 in Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn showcasing daily live music, DJ's, gourmet food and Alpine Lifestyle.
Easter Sunday is on the 17th April 2022 (very late) with most schools breaking up in the 2 weeks before this. Aim high or for snow-sure resorts.
When is the best time for a flexible Ski Break in 2021/22?
For most of our resorts and Hotels, we have a good degree of flexibility with arrival dates and duration. However, this is usually limited to 7-night stays over New Year and in the high season February Holidays (UK + European Holidays). The larger, more popular ski resorts (eg St Anton, Solden) offer less flexibility throughout the Winter season so it is worth looking at smaller resorts for a shorter stay.
In terms of the best dates for the most flexibility, aim for pre-Christmas, January, March and April. These dates also offer much better value for money both in terms of Hotel and flight costs.
