SNOW Report : 20th November 2019

Austria Ski Resort -  Snow Conditions

If you have been following the weather in the Alps over the last couple of weeks or seen the images across your social media you’ll no doubt be aware there has been a LOT of SNOW in some but not all of the Alps and some of the snow-depths are already impressive for this early in the season.

Southerly storm fronts have dominated up to last weekend with the Southern Alps getting the lion’s share of the snow. For Austria this means the resorts closest to the Italian border and in the south-west of the country have seen the most snowfall.

Warm temperatures last weekend saw the snowline rising and some resorts experienced a lot of heavy rain and wet snow. This has compacted the snow pack higher up (actually a good thing this early in the season) but saw lots of snow washed away at lower altitudes.

So, how is it looking as we head towards the much-anticipated opening weekends across Austria?

There is good snow cover higher up however, lower runs and runs to resort suffered with the heavy rain last weekend. Until the snow cannons fire up or the next natural snowfall, this will limit the number of open runs. Scheduled opening weekend is 29/30th November however, Leogang is set to open some of its lifts 24th and 25th November with excellent cover higher up.

STUBAI  (15 cm lower, 145 cm upper)

16 from 25 lifts are open today and there is excellent skiing on the glacier with a good base higher up. Temperatures are cool (well below freezing) and the resort experienced a lot of fresh snow over the last weekend. As usual, a great early season resort choice.

SOLDEN  (106 cm lower, 258 cm upper)

Higher up, Solden is reporting a snow base of over 2.5 metres thanks to the recent snow. 18/31 lifts are open today and a dusting of fresh snow is expected at the weekend. Another good early season resort choice.

St Anton has snow cover down to resort level with piste preparations higher up in full swing for the planned opening weekend 30th November / 1St December. Staying cold higher up this week with settled weather.

ZELL am SEE – KAPRUN  (135 cm upper slopes)

Zell am See will be opening a few lifts this coming weekend (23/24th November) whilst the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski area at Kaprun has been open for a couple of months already and today has 15 from 23 lifts open with cool temperatures and an excellent early season base. The completed K-onnection Maiskogel lift from Kaprun resort to the Glacier has its grand opening on the 30th November.

Following a wintry and unsettled last 2-3 weeks across Austria, the weather is now fairly settled with mostly sunny days in the forecast for the week ahead. The freezing level will be around 1000-1500 metres and Solden and Stubai may see some light snow (5cm) this weekend. Other than that, it is a waiting game – snow dances please!- for the next weather front to arrive and for temperatures to fall further to allow the snow cannons to get to work in earnest especially on lower pasture slopes. It is, of course, still early days as far as the season ahead goes – for now, head high for the best conditions!
