Easter Skiing 2017 Where to go?

03/02/2017

Easter is late this this year with Easter Sunday falling on the 16th April 2017 and most schools breaking up 1st or 8th April for 2 or 3 weeks.

We think late season skiing is some of the best of Winter: For most resorts, upper slope snow depths peak around mid-March, prices are cheaper than high season February (Hotel prices and lift pass prices are lower with some resorts including child pass offers), there is still every chance of fresh snow (the winters seem to be shifting later) and, when the sun comes out, long, late terrace lunches round off a great day’s skiing!

Here, we take a look at a selection of Austrian Resorts which are great choices for skiing in late March and into April and ones in which we can offer weekly and flexible stays towards the end of the season. Hotel availability is good and there is less demand for flights too. We can also offer daily arrivals so you can avail of better fares by avoiding the weekends.

SKI CIRCUS :: SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM-LEOGANG-FIEBERBRUNN

The whole of the Ski Circus will be in full operation until the 2nd of April at which point Fieberbrunn closes and Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Leogang will be offering a reduced number of lifts at low-season prices. ‘White Pearl Mountain Days’ are planned for the last couple of weeks of March across the area showcasing live DJ’s, brunch stops, live music and gourmet hut food tasting. Children under 15 ski for FREE (when parents purchase a lift pass for 4 or more days) from the 18th of March onwards and snow will still be good – Fieberbrunn has the best snow record in the Kitzbuheler Alps thanks to its micro-climate and north-facing slopes. Fly to Salzburg, Innsbruck or Munich. Fieberbrunn closes 2nd April, Saalbach 17th April.

KITZBUHEL

Over in Kitzbuhel, skiing will still be good on the upper slopes which is where the vast amount of the runs and lifts are located. Sure, the village lies at around 800 metres but the skiing mainly takes place from 1200-2000 metres and the area is scheduled to be open until after Easter. And, don’t forget, more snow falls at a lower altitude in the Eastern part of the Alps – altitude is not everything!

Expect to take the lift back down to resort level come April but the flipside is some great rates on top hotels and some great cafes in the atmospheric and historic resort centre to while away sunny afternoons. Fly to Salzburg, Innsbruck or Munich. Main season closes 18th April, shoulder season until end of April.

STUBAI

Austria’s largest glacier resort boasts over 115 kilometres of snow-sure skiing and is open from October through to May. Skiing is guaranteed here and it is a very short transfer (30 minutes) from Innsbruck to the main resort village of Neustift in the middle of the Stubai Valley. One of the best snow parks in the Austrian Alps (Stubai Zoo) and FREE lift passes for children under 10. Fly to Innsbruck.

SOLDEN

One of Austria’s big party resorts (up there with St Anton and Ischgl), Solden is a lively resort with skiing up to 3,000 metres and lift access from the resort centre (most Hotels are within walking distance of the 2 main lifts). Their main season runs until 23rd April. Fly to Innsbruck.

KAPRUN

The glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn Mountain and Glacier is the main attraction for winter visitors to Kaprun which is pretty resort village not far from Zell am See. It is a short hop on the free ski bus from Kaprun centre to the main ski area and there are some great hotels offering excellent value for money. Fly to Salzburg, transfer time 1-1.5 hours.

ST ANTON

Austria’s premier resort and largest lift-linked ski area (305 km of piste!) lies at 1,304 metres with skiing up to 2,800 metres and a ski season that extends to the 23rd April. Reduced price lift pass prices are on offer from 1-17.4.17 (Wedel / Sun Weeks) and from 18-23.4.17 (Crystal Snow week with limited lift operation planned). If you have tried to get in to St Anton for a short break in the main season and failed (most hotels are full Saturday-Saturday) then April could be the window you’ve been waiting for. Fly to Innsbruck for the 1.5 hours transfer to resort.
