SNOW Report : 1st December 2017
Welcome to the first snow report of the Winter Season as we take a look at the snow and skiing conditions across a selection of our Austrian Resorts.
After three rather sluggish starts to the last three winters, November weather patterns have returned to ‘normal’ and delivered lots of snow to the Austrian Alps setting up one of the best starts to the Winter Season for many, many years.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BASE
It is currently very cold in Austria – well below freezing at 2,000 metres – and has been for some time now. Four separate storms have brought 20-30 cm of fresh snow over the last four weekends and this has fallen on cold ground ensuring the fresh snow does not melt away. With the snowpack consolidating between storms and backed up with man-made snow, we are looking at one of the best bases on and off piste for some time. Fieberbrunn already has a base of 90 cm higher up (just a reminder, it is the1st of December!) and, it is not going anywhere in a hurry. Conditions will only improve.
It is a weekend of sunshine and blue skies for most Austrian Resorts with temperatures staying stubbornly cold especially at altitude. Monday and Tuesday sees more snow with around 25-30cm of fresh snow expected around 2,000 metres. Light snow in to the valleys. Looking further ahead, there is then a couple of clear days before the next front comes in with what looks like more snowfall. Temperatures are set to remain below freezing even at valley level.
Today, Friday 1st December, and this weekend 2/3 December sees most resorts opening the majority of their lifts for the Winter Season and those lucky enough to be there will be enjoying sunshine, blue skies and powder conditions.
FIEBERBRUNN - SKI CIRCUS SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM-FIEBERBRUNN (50 cm lower slopes, 90 cm upper)
